The room’s claim
The Bible is a library written across centuries, yet it tells one unfolding story: God creates, humanity rebels, God makes covenants and rescues, Jesus announces and embodies the kingdom of God, and the Spirit sends a people toward every nation.
Before proceeding: This room presents the museum’s openly Christian reading of Scripture. Visitors are invited to examine the text, ask questions, and distinguish the Bible’s witness from every culture’s use of it—including Christian communities and institutions.
Object at the threshold
1887 Korean New Testament · opening of Mark
Before it is interpreted, the Bible is encountered as a physical object: paper, ink, binding, type, language, wear, and human touch. This page belongs to the 1887 예수셩교젼셔, the first complete Korean New Testament. Korean readers could hold words that had crossed languages and borders into their own script.
Yet the object does not end with itself. Its letters open into a story, and Christians believe that story bears witness to a living person. Examine the page closely; then enter the story it carries.
The opening claim is not that God belongs to one tribe. The heavens, earth, creatures, woman, and man receive life from God. Human dignity begins as gift and vocation: bearing God’s image within creation.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Genesis 1:1 · ESV
Disobedience ruptures trust: shame enters relationships, violence enters family, and power gathers around itself. Yet judgment never becomes God’s only word. Garments, preservation, covenant, and promise keep opening a future.
I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
Genesis 9:13 · ESV
At Babel, humanity makes unity serve self-exaltation. God scatters the peoples—then calls one family not as an end in itself, but so that all families of the earth may be blessed.
In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
Genesis 12:3 · ESV
Liberation, law, land, kingship, temple, exile, and return carry both grace and warning. Israel is called to covenant loyalty and justice, yet repeatedly imitates the powers around it. Prophets speak against worship severed from mercy.
Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
Amos 5:24 · ESV
The Bible’s story does not reach its center in an idea or institution. The Word becomes flesh in Jesus. God’s character is made visible in a human life: Jesus welcomes outsiders, touches those kept at a distance, shares tables, forgives, serves, confronts hypocrisy, and remains faithful through death and resurrection.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
John 1:14 · ESV
Jesus announces and embodies God’s reign. The kingdom of God becomes visible wherever God’s will is lived: enemies are loved, greatness becomes service, outsiders become neighbors, forgiveness interrupts retaliation, and the least are received with dignity. His followers are not invited merely to admire this life, but to follow him.
Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
Matthew 5:44 · ESV
The written Word is read and heard; Christians believe the Spirit makes its truth living within persons and among them. The risen Jesus sends a gathered community of followers across languages and boundaries. Their lives become unfinished letters—never flawless, always accountable to the one they proclaim.
You are a letter from Christ… written… with the Spirit of the living God.
2 Corinthians 3:3 · ESV
The story closes not with escape from earth but with God dwelling among humanity and making all things new. Until then, followers work out what God is working within them. God’s will lived in them and through them makes the kingdom of God visible on earth—partially, imperfectly, and as a promise of what God will complete.
Behold, I am making all things new.
