Albert Ruyl, a junior trader of the Dutch East India Company, studied Malay in Sumatra, wrote one of its first grammars, and in 1612 — one year after the King James Bible appeared in England — completed the Gospel of Matthew in Malay. Printed in 1629 as a Dutch–Malay diglot, it stands in the records of the Bible Societies as the earliest translation and printing of Scripture for the Gospel's sake in any non-European language on earth. 토착화의 첫 실험

Ruyl did something translators still study four centuries on: he made the Book at home in its readers' world. Plants and animals no islander had seen were rendered as ones they knew — famously, the fig tree became a banana tree — and for God he chose the name his readers already used for the Most High: Allah, a choice that set the course for every Malay and Indonesian Bible since. Korea's translators would make the same kind of choice in 1882, choosing 하나님. The Gospels and Acts appeared in 1651, the Psalms soon after — and in 1733 the first complete Malay Bible, the labor of Melchior Leijdecker, was published: a whole Bible in an Asian trade language while most of the world's peoples had not a verse. Malay was the tongue ten thousand islands used to speak to each other; centuries later it would become Bahasa Indonesia, the national language. The Bible did not follow that language's rise — it rode ahead of it. 1651년 사복음서와 사도행전이, 곧이어 시편이 나왔습니다 — 그리고 1733년, 최초의 말레이어 성경 전서가 멜키오르 레이데커의 수고로 출판되었습니다. 세계 대부분의 민족이 성경 한 구절도 갖지 못했던 시대에, 아시아의 무역 언어로 된 성경 전체가 존재했던 것입니다. 말레이어는 만 개의 섬이 서로 말을 주고받던 언어였고, 수 세기 뒤 국어인 바하사 인도네시아가 됩니다. 성경은 그 언어의 부상을 뒤따른 것이 아니라 — 앞서 달렸습니다.

Malay opened the door; the islands' own tongues walked through it. The Javanese New Testament of 1831 — printed, fittingly, at Serampore, the engine room this wing's India Room honors — began a work that has never paused: Scripture moving into the hundreds of languages of Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, the Moluccas, and Papua. In the world's largest Muslim-majority nation lives one of Asia's largest Christian communities — tens of millions of believers, worshiping in the language Ruyl's Gospel helped shape, reading Bibles published by the Indonesian Bible Society in a line of translations four centuries long. Whole regions of the archipelago are majority-Christian; the islands hold both deep coexistence and real trials.
