The room of faithfulness without harvest. Seven rooms in this wing have told stories of harvest — revivals, mass movements, churches by the million. This room tells the other story, and tells it without apology. Thailand has heard the Word for two centuries and remained, in numbers, barely touched. Yet the Book's servants gave this nation its first press, its first newspaper, its first modern surgery — and never stopped loving it. If impact were only a percentage, this room would be empty. Thailand's first light was struck in another country, by a woman this museum has already mourned. In Burma, Ann Judson — of the Myanmar Room's prison years — met Siamese war captives, learned their language for their sake, and translated the Gospel of Matthew into Siamese. In 1819 it became the first text ever printed in Thai script with movable type — at Serampore, the engine room of this wing. Ann never saw Siam. On August 23, 1828, Karl Gützlaff and Jacob Tomlin sailed up the river to Bangkok — the first resident Protestant missionaries in Siam. With the indispensable help of Thai assistants whose names history failed to keep, they attempted a Thai New Testament, rough but pioneering. Grief drove Gützlaff on: his wife died, his health broke, and in 1831 he left Bangkok for the China coast — and one year later stood off Korea, Bibles in hand. Before they left, their letters home summoned the next generation to Siam. The medical missionary Dan Beach Bradley reached Siam in 1835 — carrying, by way of Singapore, the very Thai type descended from Ann's 1819 printing. In thirty-eight years he gave the kingdom its first Thai-script printing press, first newspaper, first monolingual Thai dictionary, first modern surgery, and smallpox vaccination — and won almost no one. He loved the land, buried a wife and children in it, and served until his own death in Bangkok in 1873. Bradley is this room's question made flesh: was his life a failure? The work pressed on through the century: mission stations at Petchaburi in 1861, then north to Chiang Mai in 1867 under Daniel McGilvary, whose decades among the peoples of the north opened a region. And in 1883 the complete Thai Bible was finished — sixty-four years after Ann's Matthew, the patient sum of generations who would not see large harvests and translated anyway. Two centuries on, Christians remain a small fraction of Thailand — Protestants less than one in a hundred. And yet: the Scriptures live in Thai and in the languages of the north; the Church of Christ in Thailand, the nation's oldest Protestant body, gathers Thai, Chinese, Korean, and English-speaking congregations under one roof; schools and hospitals born of mission serve millions who will never enter a church. The Karen revival next door began among people the Thai mission first touched. This room's confession is the Sower's own: the servant's task is the sowing. Three strands bind this room to the host nation. Gützlaff left Bangkok in 1831 and stood off Korea's coast the very next year — Thailand was a station on the road that opened Wing I. In 1950, when war engulfed Korea, Thailand answered among the first, sending its soldiers — the "Little Tigers" — to fight and die for a peninsula most had never seen. And today the current flows back in the currency this museum keeps: Thailand is among the great fields of Korean missionary service, and Korean-speaking congregations worship inside Thailand's own oldest church body.
